Who are we?

Stable Fly Action Group Committee

The Stable Fly Action Group (SFAG) is made up of concerned and affected community members whose livelihoods and lifestyles have been affected by this pest and who found that they weren't being represented in this war against the Stable Fly.

The Committee

The SFAG Committee is currently made up of six members of the overall group at the moment, but new members are always warmly welcomed.  Over the years, many members of the community have made significant contributions to the work of the group and have supported those involved in the research and the areas of government who have been working towards controls.

The President, Bob Wilson, and the Secretary/Treasurer, Jo Ottaway, were founding members of this group and have spent the last 17 years working to represent those impacted by this pest, lobbying, collaborating and providing support.

    Collaboration

    • Working collaboratively with Vegetables WA representatives to determine ways forward to combat stable fly infestations in raw manure and vegetable crop waste, including having constructive input into the section of the VWA Good Practice Guide entitled Good Practice Management of Manures and Vegetable Crop Residue.
    • Working collaboratively with Shire of Gingin officers, particularly Geoff Slater on reporting and monitoring of stable fly outbreaks.

    BAM Act 2007

    (Biosecurity & Agricultural Management)

    • Lobbying the Western Australian Government to have the section of the VWA Good Practice Guide entitled Good Practice Management of Manures and Vegetable Crop Residue enshrined in the BAM Act legislation.

    Research and Information Gathering

    • Committee members attended the Waste Management Board's public consultation workshop on Interim Standards for Organics Applied to Land and Draft Organic Strategy in order to have input into dealing with organic waste.
    • SFAG carried out its own research into the composting industry, visiting sites and learning about this industry's endeavours, with a view to helping find solutions for horticulturists, who will require alternatives to the use of raw poultry manure when it is finally banned.

    Monitoring

    • The SFAG Committee maintains contact with the many stakeholders connected to this problem, and endeavours to work towards long term, sustainable control measures to ensure that the breeding of stable flies is minimised and infestations are less likely to occur.

Only with your support, can the Stable Fly Action Group committee continue to hold to account those within the government, whose role it is to educate, monitor and enforce the acts and legislation that is in place and guarantee a voice to those affected by this horrendous pest.

Those suffering from the impact of these flies must have a voice.

    Be part of the voice.
